Taiwan loves baseball. Most people absolutely adore the Taiwanese players in the Majors, but they also love their home teams. By this, I mean the Chinese Profession Baseball League, or the CPL. While this league only has four teams, children and adults alike follow the status of their team and often attend games.
This year, Kaohsiung acquired a new team. The EDA Rhinos. They join Taoyuan’s Monkeys, Tainan’s Lions, and Taipei’s Elephants to make the complete league. These teams constantly travel around Taiwan, playing in all the major cities.
To make things more exciting for the new team, the EDA Rhinos signed former MLB star, Manny Ramirez at the beginning of the season.
Last Sunday, we went to see a game with some friends. The EDA Rhinos use Kaohsiung’s Cheng Ching Lake Baseball Stadium as a home stadium and play there frequently. Tickets range from $150NT to $300NT.
While we were watching, Manny, as the Taiwanese have dubbed him, swung the bat twice. The first time, he hit a home run. After his second at bat, he left the game. Unfortunately, I’m not sure Manny has lived up to his potential here in Kaohsiung.
If you happen to be in Taiwan during baseball season, pack a cooler full of beer and snacks (they let you bring whatever into the stadium) and head down to the local baseball stadium. You’ll be surprised by the rambunctious nature of the Taiwanese crowd. It’s hard not to get infected with their enthusiasm. As always, it’s a whole different ballgame in Taiwan.
