Taiwan has occasionally been called the Fruit Kingdom. Most varieties of the stuff can be grown on this small island we call home. Taiwan produces bananas, mangoes, guavas, pineapples, peaches, strawberries, starfruits, jujubes, bell fruits, litchis, and pomelos among others.
The picture above shows a common fruit stand selling cut fruit. This one is in a night market, but people randomly sell cut and whole fruit on most streets. There are also many 24 hour stores that sell whole fruit. Be aware, though, that you will only be able to buy fruit that is currently in season. (For example, don’t look for mangoes in the winter.)
In Kaohsiung, we are blessed to be near many fruit farms. This drives down the price of fresh fruit. For one small bag of fresh fruit, we usually pay no more than $1 US. If you are in southern Taiwan, don’t miss out on gorging yourself on sweet delicious fruit daily.
